Crystal Winter: Welcome to TransGlobe Chat, how may I help you today?
Kimli: Hi Crystal
Kimli: I have a question about your no pet policy
Kimli: specifically, why is there a no pet policy?
Crystal Winter: What city are you in?
Kimli: Victoria BC
Crystal Winter: Because of the damages and noise our company policy
Kimli: Cats do not cause damage
Kimli: I am trying to find an apartment for my mother, a 63 year old widow
Crystal Winter: Its a provincial law for BC
Kimli: Her only companion is a cat
Crystal Winter: we don’t allow any pets
Kimli: Um .. there is no law in BC that says you are not allowed to have pets
Crystal Winter: its our company policy in the BC area
Kimli: Do you allow people to pay pet deposits?
Crystal Winter: No unfortunatley we don’t
Kimli: Transglobe has taken over the majority of the apartment buildings in Central Victoria, including ones I used to live in that did allow pets
Kimli: Your policies are really unreasonable in this day and age, especially given that 20% of the residents of Victoria are senior citizens
Kimli: My mother would be willing and able to pay a pet deposit, yet she can’t find anyone to rent to her because she has one spayed indoor silent cat
Crystal Winter: Unfortunatley we don’t allow pets and we don’t take deposits for pets in British Columbia however we do allow pets in other provinces we have to follow provincial guidlines for BC
Kimli: What provincial guideline are you following?
Crystal Winter: THese our the procedures we have to follow if you require further information on this matter please call 250-383-0039
Kimli:So you are unable to tell me which provincial guideline you follow that states you are not allowed to rent to tenants with pets?
Crystal Winter: We don’t have that information in our call center you will need to contact your regional office and they can provide you with further information
Kimli:I see .. thank you for your time

I need help. My mother, who is utterly insane, is threatening to buy a $300K+ condo because she can’t find an apartment to rent. Fine, that’s her prerogative – except she’s been looking for TWO DAYS. My mom, instead of being somewhat reasonable about this, would rather lock herself into a massive mortgage at untold amounts of money per month, all because she can’t find a suitable apartment in the TWO FRIGGIN’ DAYS she’s been looking.
I need to find my mother an apartment in Victoria BC for July 1st. She’s looking for a 2-bedroom place – one, if it’s large enough – that is within the city limits, and allows her to keep her cat. Her limit for rent is about $900/m, and she’s willing to pay a pet deposit if she has to. She doesn’t smoke, throw loud parties, or annoy other people as much as she does me, but that’s because she’s my mom and not yours.
If you know of anything that might be suitable or any place I can look online that isn’t Craigslist, since I have that covered, please please please let me know.
Also, to all the large building management companies – TransGlobe, Devon Properties, Boardwalk, all the rest – that have outdated, rigid, and utterly unfair policies against pets in rental buildings – wake the fuck up.
Every place to find a rental in Victoria
I have a strict policy of lying to rental agencies about pets. I don’t mention the cat, and if they ask I lie my ass off. Mainly because their rule is unreasonable and, generally, large companies can’t make exceptions. But the chances are huge that the property manager isn’t going to throw a good tenant out just because they have a pet, even if they aren’t supposed to have one. There are laws in almost every other province prohibiting landlords from discriminating on the basis of pets (many still try) but BC is way behind the times.
So I say lie! Lie like the wind!
illie drops some science.
Uh, I’d steer clear of TransGlobe if possible. My friend lives in a building taken over by them and apparently tthey are EVIL. There was even some big local news story about their Evilness. Brown Brothers has some nice buildings and sometimes allows pets…
Best bet might be a suite in a private home – more flexible.
I found Brown Brothers to be occasionally reasonable when I lived in Victoria — occasionally unreasonable as well, like the time they charges us to mow the lawn when we’d done so ourselves three days earlier — but they backed down pretty quickly when I told them to fuck off. :D
Laws about not allowing pets, sheesh. I think the law she’s quoting is “they CAN deny pets, so they’re going to.” (as opposed to Toronto, I believe, where “no pets” is against the law.)
Also keep in mind that the now TransGlobe buildings may have allowed cats previously, so there will still be some grandfathered into the building. If you find a building that otherwise works, try pleading directly with the manager. Might be willing to look the other way, kinda like the manager of my building who told me it was fine by her to have aquariums seeing as how she has a bunch in her apt, even though the rental agreement prohibits them (“no water-filled devices”).
I know the managers of the building you were in on the Gorge are now managing a Devon building downtown, after having been demoted to cleaners by TransGlobe.
I really think Crystal Winter is also her pole dancing name. It sounds like a porn name, for certain.
I have nothing helpful to add otherwise, but I’m sorry this sucks. I don’t understand why management companies are so ridiculous about cats.
It would take about 10 cats to equal the destructive potential of a toddler. Sneh.

guess what. They told us to kick the squirrels out that we have.
we have dogs and 1 cat.
They can’t do jack.
i’m renting a unit from transglobe — I am having a fucking hell of a time getting through to these incompetent pricks. I REALLY suggest NOBODY rents from them, EVER. I would sooner live in a carboard box the have to deal with their shitty processes again.
None is worse than Devon Properties. Their business plan is to take advantage of as many renters as possible and screw them when they leave. If you rent from them, good luck getting any part of your damage deposit back. First time renters especially are ripe for the pickin’ from these a-holes.
