scott pilgrim vs. dental health

Scott Pilgrim made my tooth fall out.

I went to go see the movie again with a bunch of people who hadn’t seen it before. It was just as awesome as the first time – perhaps a little more so, because I lost a tooth during the movie and I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen last time.

Renee and I had gone to Save On Foods before the show to get snacks, and I bought some wine gums. I chewed on one, and felt something hard in my mouth – ’twas my rear upper left tooth; the one with the fancy gold crown. It doesn’t hurt, thanks to the root canal I had done on it way in the ago – but now I’m kind of freaking out. Teeth don’t just fall out for no reason. I feel like a toothless old woman with bad oral hygiene. I’m afraid of how much this is going to a) cost and b) hurt to fix – I already postponed my next dental appointment because I’ve used up my dental benefits for the year and don’t want to pay $650 out of pocket on top of the $565 I had to pay on Monday. This is FULL OF SUCKS.

The movie is still awesome, though. Go see it. It amuses me that I went from seeing no movies since Star Trek last May to seeing three in one week. I’m on a roll! A big toothless roll!

  1. I lost a tooth while eating a donut once. Of course, I was 7.

If the tooth was from a root canal, it’s “dead”, isn’t it? Maybe they’re supposed to be weaker.

And it could also partly have to do with bad dental work (in the past, even). You know I’ve had some experiences with that.

    • Yeah, the tooth was definitely weak – the dentist also did some stuff to it so it would stop hurting (it was too high), and I think that made things go south. It’s actually REALLY disgusting – I’m kind of horrified by it – and I’m not really sure WHERE it broke off. There’s something sticking out of my gums and a huge hole – was it attached to a post? Did the crown break? I’m confused and grossed out.

  2. Normally, crowns are just glued back on, a quite painless (and free, usually) procedure. If there’s decay under it, though, that’s a different story. So take it back to the dentist and hope….

  3. Sounds like your crown popped off. The hole would be where the crown was seated. Head to the dentist asap to get it glued back on so that you don’t damage the crown prep (which will look like a little flat stub). The crown probably didn’t break, just came un-adhered thanks to the suction of that wine gum. You’re lucky you didn’t swallow it like I did mine, eating scrambled eggs (those eggs are just so sticky).

  4. Indeed – the nub of tooth (post) left behind to adhere the crown to feels pretty small, but since you had a root canal there are three or more inch long posts anchored into your jaw to hold the whole thing intact. The porcelain and gold crown is really, really strong and can crush many winegums without fear. Getting it glued back on won’t be a big deal, might take 15 minutes which you know because you got it done already, right?

Now, sifting through your own poo to find a swallowed crown sounds pretty gross, but from what I understand it’s not all that uncommon. Remember to wear gloves!
