bronze is the new gold

Have you guys ever seen me speechless?

It’s a hilarious sight.

I honestly don’t know how this happened, but I came in third in the Best of 604 Personal Blog category.

Thank you so, so much. All of you who voted for me – you guys are awesome. I’m beyond flattered and delighted. I won’t lie – there were tears. They didn’t fall, but there was some definite emotion-based moisture in the eyeball region.

Miranda texted me this morning to tell me, and it’s a damn good thing I wasn’t driving because I was shocked and awed. You know when people say things like “I didn’t expect this at all!” and you’re all “okay whatever you totally expected it because you just pulled a pre-written speech out of your pocket so clearly on some level you were prepared in case you won”? Well, I honestly did not expect this in any way shape or form. I’m not very well known in the local blogging scene because I’m pathologically afraid of people and don’t attend many events, so I assumed I would place approximately 40th out of the 36 nominees. Words cannot begin to describe how shocked I was when Miranda texted me the news; not even really big words like circumlocution or grandiloquent.

Truthfully, I gave up on campaigning for myself pretty early on. I figured I didn’t have a choice, given the size of the category, the talent of my fellow nominees, and my relative obscurity. As well, the Cans for Comments drive started the day after voting began, and I focused most of my whoring on getting the word out because I wanted to really make a difference that would benefit others instead of my ego. I think I won the karmic lottery in this round, because not only did I attract a lot of comments for the food bank, I came in 3rd which is basically 2nd, given the controversey surrounding the 1st place winner.

Thanks, everyone.

And congratulations to my fellow nominees and winners – Miranda and Reilly (Blue Olive Photography) came in 3rd in the Best Photo Blog category, Monica (Your Dose of Lunacy) came in 3rd for Best Humour Blog, and Corinna (Gus Greeper) came in 2nd (aka 1st) for Best Personal Blog. These people are so great at what they do, and to be able to say that some people consider me worthy to walk along side them is just .. so very, very cool.

  1. The winner won by a very, very large margin. This isn’t a big deal – he has a great deal more readers than the others do because of the nature of his blog – but the controversy comes from the fact that his blog is his business and therefore isn’t a true personal blog. Also, there are the comments that he’s made regarding the competition:

“I had no doubt that I would win the Best Personal Blog of Vancouver. Given the size of my readership vs. the competition, it wasn’t even close. My goal wasn’t to win the award itself. My goal was to get more votes than the entire field combined. I came up short, with 46% of all the votes. Gus Greeper was runner up with 7% of the votes.”

    and

“Had there been a marketing blog category, I would have enter that but I would still enter myself in the personal blog category because I still consider this blog personal (it bears my name after all). At one point, I thought about entering every category to take first place in all of them but that would have turned the competition into a joke.”

.. pretty disgusting. As far as I’m concerned, Gus won the competition because her blog is a personal blog for reals yo and not the thing that pays her bills but happens to have her name on it and therefore is “personal” instead of “business”.

Just my $.02, but I’m definitely not alone in those two pennies.

  2. Oh My God, how did that asshole get nominated for “personal ‘blog” ? I’ve been blogging for ten years and I am brilliant with a mind that would make Einstein blush so I am qualified to tell that what he has there is NOT a “personal blog.” That is a business ‘blog, clear and simple. All his posts are about business – the business of ‘blogging, certainly – and there is nothing remotely “personal” about it.

    You rule 2nd place, lady!

  3. dudette, im so happy for you. your blog is so funny and so you, or what i know of you so far, you are real, like me you blog for free, and i wish you had have been there. i feel like an ass i never said congrats to the other winners i will in my comments, headache almost killed me yesterday.
i think your cans for comments is genius.
i didn’t not campaign but i didn’t openly campaign, i sent an email to prolly around a hundred people and then once i learned of Chow on the last day i emailed two long time readers (mostly to bitch HA) and i think they pulled me though.
im really proud of all of us, and im so thankful for forgiveness right now.
this all feels pretty awesome eh?

  4. Congrats Kim. When I read the comments of the first place winner, my first thought was what an arrogant prick! He has an ego the size of Manhatten. I agree that his blog is not of a personal nature. He doesn’t poor his sole out like you and Corinna do and frankly I don’t find his blog interesting at all.

  5. Of course you placed — you’re good. what reason would I have to read you; I don’t even live in your country — but you keep posting and I keep tuning in. You have a definite, distinctive voice. Congrats!

  6. Congrats on your 3rd or 2nd place. I really liked your can idea. As for my blog being my business. Nope. Not the case. I have a normal business that makes most of the money but the blog is not it.

I blog for fun and about what I am interested in. That’s why you’ll see posts about what I had for dinner last night to posts about how to make money online. It’s what I’m interested in and passionate about. I would still be updating the blog even if it makes nothing. That to me is the very definition of a personal blog. It’s only a bonus that it makes $400K a year.

Next time you do another can promo, let me know. I’ll give you a plug.
